About Yumi Kim

Ever since she was a child, while most friends were playing dress up, Kim Phan was designing dresses and revamping vintage clothes. Her passion for fashion and design, at such an early age, propelled her into a life of creative expression.

Despite no formal training, she pursued her dreams of building a career in fashion by moving to New York with only ideas and a few suitcases in hand. A natural fit for the city, with the right opportunities and networks, she quickly launched her contemporary clothing line, Yumi Kim (Yumi named after her beloved Yorkie).

The brand is inspired by Phan's personal aesthetics, vintage accents and silhouettes, with a touch of funk and urban femininity. A lover of flowers, Phan incorporates floral patterns and color schemes in many of her designs.

"Flowers are so girly and playful. They really accentuate the bright, fun mood I try to channel in my clothing, and makes every girl feel pretty" Phan said.

In Fall of 2008, Phan opened her first flagship store in New York’s hip Lower East Side; followed by an Upper East Side location to cater to both styles of the Downtown and Uptown girl. A near replica of Phan’s closet, the boutique is a medley of her favorite accessory designers, and cool vintage finds, mixed with handpicked home gifts that accompany the entire Yumi Kim collection.

“I wanted the Yumi Kim shops to be a direct reflection of my personality and style: fun and flirty with bits of quirkiness and hip appeal,” said Phan. “When you’re in the Yumi Kim boutique, I want it to feel like you are with your best friend who always has great style.”
